Duo the Owl is one of the most memed company mascots and Duolingo loves encourage all the love around the internet. So for Duolingo’s 10th anniversary they wanted to “invade the metaverse” but sometimes you already did ;)

Knowing there were already tons of devs making super memey games about Duo on Roblox, we thought what if we just put a little gasoline on the fire. And like that, Duojam was born.

We made a custom asset pack for anyone and everyone to download, featuring an official Duo the Owl model, basics like trees, and rocks, and flowers, and some not so basic models like a catapult, an arcade, an office, and an elephant.

Devs were asked to spend 7 days making anything they wanted in Roblox, as long as Duo the Owl was included in the game.

We had no idea just how much love would come through. At the end of the week had over 20 games created, and a new community on Roblox and Discord of connected fans of the this much beloved bird.

We then built a hub world to showcase all these games. Even though you could search for “Duojam” in Roblox to find the games, we wanted to take it one step further by connecting all these games to the hub world.

Inside the Fan Made Arcade players would find teleports to all the fan made Duo games, and be able to teleport back to the hub world without ever leaving the game.

And, players were encouraged to play these games as they helped them earn more in-game coins which could be exchanged for free Duo merch items.

Finally, I built a version of Spanish or Vanish in the hub world. This was a three level game where players had to find items, avoid Duo chasing them, and make it to the end in time for Duo’s birthday party.

The levels featured a hedge maze, a corporate office, and a retro arcade. In between levels, players answered questions in Spanish and collected coins.
